Monica Thissen

Senior Associate Attorney

WCAB Venues Covered:Bakersfield, Fresno, Salinas, San Luis Obispo

Monica Thissen is a Senior Associate Attorney in the Fresno office. Her practice includes defense on workers’ compensation claims, alternative dispute resolution/carve out forums, Labor Code §132a, and §4553 Serious and Willful Misconduct claims. She remains committed to maintaining open and effective communication with her clients and obtaining favorable settlements on their behalf.

Monica began her practice at a workers’ compensation defense firm, where she gained considerable experience participating in extensive trials, cross-examinations of claimants and doctors on complex medical issues, and appeals to the WCAB and Fifth District Court of Appeals.

A career memory that stands out in Monica’s mind begins with her traveling from Fresno to Los Angeles to depose an AME on a heart presumption case. Despite leaving early, an accident on the Grapevine would prevent her from making it to the doctor’s office in time, she handled the deposition by phone from the side of the road and got the doctor to admit the medical data did not support a diagnosis of LVH (30% WPI). Instead, the applicant was rated at 8%WPI for hypertension with 50% nonindustrial apportionment, thus reducing the cost to the client by approximately $50,000.00.

Monica grew up in Fresno, California. Her hobbies include golfing, sewing, and crafting. An ideal weekend for Monica consists of relaxing and spending time with her granddaughter and loved ones. Three words to describe her are fun, empathetic, and genuine.

If Monica could have one superpower, it would be the ability to read minds. She takes a diverse interest in music, from genres like alternative and classic rock to hip hop and country. As for Monica’s favorite food, it is tied between cheeseburgers and pizza.
